Q: I’m a professional woman with lifelong ADHD. Recently, I had to reach out to our corporate accommodations department for help addressing some workplace issues directly resulting from my ADHD symptoms.
As this is the first time I’ve ever taken this route, I want to learn as much as I can about approaching this at work. I am disappointed at how poorly versed our HR accommodations leaders are in this area. For example:
What do I ask for?
Do corporations provide ADHD coaches?
If so, which ones and how do I connect?

In my experience most employers are not really aware of how ADHD can impact an adult. I say this because I ran into the same situation…when I was teaching. I decided early on in my career that instead of trying to explain ADHD, I would explain my personal struggles as specifically as possible.
If you need frequent breaks, ask HR for permission to do that.
If you need extended work hours to accommodate those breaks, as for that.
You might be able to ask for supplies – like timers, whiteboards, or huge desk planners as well, to externalize your job responsibilities.
I would communicate as clearly as you can, and meet as often as possible with your direct supervisor. This enables you to set clear deadlines and eliminates problems with prioritizing and scheduling.
In terms of an ADHD coach – they can be expensive, so asking HR to pay for one probably** won’t work.
